What is Faith?

All right, untwist your panties, this isn’t going to be a religious post. I do believe in God. If you don’t, that’s OK. He probably doesn’t believe in you either. But faith is not about God. Faith and God are often used in the same thought, but they are not bound to each other. You don’t need to believe in God to have faith.

In my opinion faith, at its core, is hope. Faith is the hope that you’ll see your grandchildren get married. Faith is the hope that you’ll be able to fit into your skinny jeans in time for your high school reunion. Faith is the hope that you won’t have to park two miles away from the mall on Black Friday and you’ll score the HDTV for $300 before they’re gone. I’m going to go out on a limb and say everyone has expressed faith at some point in their life, even if you’ve never spent a day in church.

Faith, like love, hate, anger, and trust, is unquantifiable. You can’t put it on a scale and say I have this much faith. You can’t even show it to someone, you can only express it. You can kneel in prayer or send a thought out into the universe. Either way you’re expressing faith. Any time you’ve ever wanted something to happen you are expressing faith. You could be praying for the victims of the latest natural disaster or willing your horse to cross the finish line first at the track, your motives may not be pure, but your faith is.

  1. I absolutely love you Katie. Your posts are as refreshing as a splash of hot water on my face in the morning. Right off the gate you hit me with "he probably doesn't believe in you either", sending me into a giggling fit! But most importantly, you hit the nail on the head about faith.

  3. Challenging question!

For me faith is something tangible and real. It's even more than hope. It's a rope.

My brother once told me when many years ago when I was at a difficult cross roads in my life, "Linda, faith is the opposite of fear."

    Meditate on that one.

    Nice blog!

  4. Oh, I totally believe faith is the opposite of fear. In fact, I don't think fear can exist where there is faith. I also think faith cannot exist where there is fear. If you have faith that God will always be there to hold you up no matter the circumstance, what do you have to be afraid of?

  5. My faith is as natural as breathing. I would place trust at the core instead of hope. For me, I trust the Lord with everything. It was hard for me at first, and scary, but that was many years ago and now I don't even question things. I just believe...

This is a refreshing blog. I love it!
